| History: |
Fort Washita was built in 1842 to protect the Choctaw tribes from raids by the Comanches who were terrorizing everyone
who tried to settle in the valley. The fort was built by the federal government under the direction of General
Zackary Taylor. Nineteen years later at the beginning of the Civil War all troops were withdrawn from 7 forts in
Oklahoma, including Washita. |
